Weetzie Bat is a teenage novel written by American author Francesca Lia Block and was first published by HarperCollins in 1989. The book is the first in her Dangerous Angels series, and was followed by Witch Baby in 1991.
The book follows the adventures of Weetzie and her best friend Dirk, after they are forced to face the congruences of being granted wishes from a genie in a lamp. The two seek to find love, but this is not an easy route and they face many complications in their pursuit. The main message of the story is that love is a long and complex process and does not always have the ending one might think.
The book has been well received with the The ALAN Review stating that the series is one to “share them with our friends.” It has been praised for proving a commentary on many issues, such as homosexuality, abortion and AIDS. The book also won the Phoenix Award from the Children's Literature Association (2009).
