  1. 1

What does Auden remark about the contemporary critics in his essay?

As a professor of poetry, Auden feels dejected about the quality and attitude of contemporary critics. His ironic arguments reveals the degeneration of literary culture of his time. At that time when Auden got the role of propagating the value of literary works, critics were generally driven by a notion of power. They tried to grab wealth and misuse their position by ignoring their responsibilities. They were seen to write eulogies about those in power. Their aim was to be in position without giving something to the society particularly to the literature. They wasted their talent and time only doing nonsensical writing. That's why Auden feels that it is his duty to reform the state of literary tradition and provide value to the reading public.

What does the essayist comment on the youth of his time?

Auden's comments on the condition of youth and their thinking are humorous and ironical. At his time the youth is found to be indulged in extreme worldliness. Their dreams are all about money and fame. Even their pursuit of career seems funny to the essayist. The younger generation of Auden thinks that being a writer will fetch then enough money and this career will give then enough exposure in the society. Without knowing the roles and responsibilities of a writer, they feel being "creative" in their pursuit, will bring them social respect. According to Auden, their dream will rather prove unfruitful in near future. When they will actually understand the duty of a writer, they will certainly choose "some subliterary pursuit like Advertising".
