Stop believing stories and stop wasting your time!
Minli loves her father’s stories. They are always full of miracles, wisdom, and unbelievable adventures that the girl can only dream about. The father enjoys telling stories as much as Minly likes listening to them. The only one person in their household who is not happy about it is the mother. “Stop believing stories and stop wasting your time!” she says. She warns her only daughter against thinking about wonders, for the woman is afraid that Minly won’t be able to cope with harsh reality in the future. The mother has a hard life and she knows how painful it is to give up on old dreams, so she never shares Minli’s excitement.
How can anything be impossible?
Minli leaves her family to “find Never-Ending Mountain” and “ask a question” that is going to change their fortune. Of course, the girl doesn’t speak about her plan ton either her parents or her friends. She doesn’t even know where to go, for she has never left her tiny village before! Obviously her parents try to catch her before it is too late, but the goldfish man manages to make them change their plans. “You need to trust her,” he says. “How can anything be impossible?” he asks. Indeed, Minli proves that “fates written in the Book of Fortune can be changed.”
She sighed and said she wished she had my freedom.
The Buffalo boy meets a girl who comes from a noble family. He expects her to be “snobbish” and rude, but she is nothing like that. On the contrary, “a lot of the time” she sighs and says she wishes to have his “freedom.” She is “not allowed to do anything” where she lives. There is always someone “watching” and telling her “what to do” which is “kind of lonely.” The buffalo boy becomes her only one real friend. The pair can’t meet often but whenever they see each other, they “laugh enough to last for the month.”
