Onyesonwu
Onyesnowu is the main protagonist of the novel. She is Ewu, a mixed-race child, who is born from rape by a Nuru man. Her mother, Najeeba belongs to the Okeke tribe. she is treated as an outcast by her tribe. Onyesonwu finds out that her biological father Diab is a great sorcerer and she inherits the magical power of her biological father. Onyesonwu starts her journey of becoming a powerful sorcerer to take her revenge from her mother’s rapist and to defeat the Nuru tribe to save the Okeke tribe from slavery.
Najeeba
Najeeba is an Okeke woman who has been raped by a Nuru man. She bears humiliation because her daughter is Ewu. She raises Onyesonwu in an isolated desert. When Najeeba comes to Jwahir city, she meets a kind blacksmith, Fadil. Soon after they get married to each other.
Mwita
Mwita is a love interest of Onyesonwu. He is also an Ewu and has magical powers like Onyesonwu. They both are the disciple of the same sorcerer. Mwita helps Onyesonwu to understand her abilities and joins her quest to defeat the powerful.
Daib
Onyesonwu’s biological father, Daib, who is the great Nuru sorcerer, believes that goddess Ani created the Nuru tribe to enslave Okeke people. He wants the Nuru people to become more powerful, so they can continue their domination and eradication of the Okeke tribe.
Aro
A local sorcerer who teaches Ewus to develop their abilities.He trains Mwita,but refuses to teach Onyesonwu first considering the fact that she is a girl.Later after the death of her step-father,agrees to train her.
