Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China Background

Wild Swans : Three Daughters Of China is a family history that spans three generations and more than a century. It tells the story of the lives of three generations of women in China and is written by Chinese author Jung Chang. Wild Swans contains the biographies of Chang's grandmother and mother followed by her own autobiography.

The book was translated into thirty seven languages but was first translated into traditional Chinese and published in mainland China in 1997, six years after its worldwide publication. It was also adapted as a play for the Young Vic Theater Company in the UK.

Chang left China for England as a student and still lives there today. She is only allowed to visit friends and family on the Chinese mainland on rare occasions by special permission from Chinese authorities.
