Willa of the Wood Essay Questions

Essay Questions

  1. 1

Why does Willa and her fellow clan members think that humans are bad?

From a very young age, Willa and her fellow clan members think that humans are bad because they witness the behavior of certain humans and because of cultural customs which have long said that humans are wholesale evil. The trouble is that most of the humans that Willa and her fellow clan members see in action are lumberjacks and are responsible for the destruction of their sacred, magical, fantastical homes in the forest.

  2. 2

Why is the forest so important to Willa and her clan?

The forest is important to Willa and her clan because, first and foremost, it has been their home for countless years. Beyond that, the forest is so important to Willa and her clan because it gives certain members special, powerful abilities.

  3. 3

What is one of the book's major themes?

One of the book's major themes involves the cultural differences between native societies (in the case of the book, Willa and her clan) and colonizing societies (the humans) have. Instead of taking a side in the debate, the author discusses the negative behavior and lack of morals each side exhibits. In other words, the author makes the point that both sides - the native societies and colonizing societies - had faults in this situation and, in a broader sense, throughout history.
