Damiel
Damiel is an angel that records history with the people of Berlin. He desires to love a woman, Marion who is a trapeze artist in the circus. And after great contemplation he is willing to give up his angelic status in eternity in order to experience life on earth and all of its sensory pleasures.
Cassiel
Cassiel is an angel who is very close with Damiel. He surveys Berlin in order to keep record of what occurs in the city day to day in humanity. He helps people through the difficulty of their life by providing peace through changed thoughts. He is torn apart by the suicide of a young man he cannot help, and he chooses to stay an angel when his closest friend leaves him to become human.
Marion
Marion is a trapeze artist in the circus. She is a woman who is very lonely and desires to change her life. She feels the presence of well-being when Damiel is around. Her beauty convinces Damiel to give up being an angel in order to love her. When she encounters Damiel for the first time in human form she knows this is the man she is made to be with throughout her time on earth.
Peter Falk
Peter Falk plays a version of himself in this story. He is an actor who's come to Berlin in order to make a film, but he is able to sense the angels around him even though he cannot see them. He speaks to them. We learn that Falk was once an angel who traded his angelic form to become human.
