What makes Palmer different from the others around him?
Palmer is different from the people around him, because he is kind. He doesn't wish to harm anyone and understands that animals also have feeling. It is normal for everyone in his city to kill pigeons and everyone that turns ten does it. However, he doesn't want to and is therefore afraid of his tenth birthday.

How is Palmer's character development throughout the book?
Palmer's character development is circular. He is a very nice boy and is very nonviolent. However, he starts hanging around people that enjoy other pain and he is pressured to join in. He doesn't know how to stop it. However, he returns to his old ways of living as he understands the value of being nice and calm.

What might the pigeons represent in the book?
The pigeons might represent goodness. Children in the book are all forced to kill pigeons, thus killing the goodness in the children. It might be a reason why the town is so turbulent as everyone that grows up there are violent from the rituals they had to go through when they were young.
