In simple times, when work is easy and neighbors help each other, life is a blessed state. In troubled times, however, bitterness and hardship take their toll on society and replace goodwill with malice. The true account told in Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers, illustrates the bold nature of humanity that defies adversity. As a Muslim man trying to survive in a disaster tainted with conspiracy beliefs and suspicion, the main character faces unique challenges. Zeitoun is able to hold onto his honor through deeds to others, and is able to conserve his dignity through mercies others have granted him. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, and after its wake, clients and authorities identified Zeitoun by his religion or nation of origin. Such discrimination was counterproductive to the human spirit, and was continuously responded to with civility from Zeitoun and his loved ones.
