Aomame
Aomame is one of the protagonists in the novel. She is a young and intelligent woman whose core beliefs force her to live a double life. During the day, she works as a regular gym instructor but at night, she works as an assassin for a company in Japan. Aomame’s victims are sex offenders. She believes that the body is a shrine that should be protected.
As the story progresses, Aomame falls in love with an old schoolmate, Tengo, and is faced with the dilemma of whether to share the secrets of her double life with her new partner.
Tengo
Tengo is a tutor who specializes in math. During his free time, Tengo writes short stories but is yet to get his big break. Nonetheless, the young author takes pride in his work and relishes the thought of creating new characters in his mind. After his encounter with Aomame, Tengo also falls deeply in love.
Ushikawa
Ushikawa works as a private investigator for a religious cult called Sakigake. Ushikawa circles the lives of Aomame and Tengo after he realizes that the death of the cult leader, Fukada, is connected to the young couple. Aomame killed the cult leader after receiving information from her contact in Tokyo. After following Aomame and Tengo for some time, Ushikawa drops the case once he understands the reason behind Aomame’s murders.
Fuka-Eri
Fuka-Eri is a young and brilliant teenager who despite being born into a cult does not share the same beliefs as her father Fukada. Fuka-Eri is also an author whose book attracts the attention of Tengo. However, she suffers from dyslexia which is a result of growing up in the commune. After her father’s death, Fuka-Eri moves in with an old friend of her dad who works as a professor at the University.
Tsubasa
Tsubasa is a teenage girl who is sexually abused by the cult leader. After she exposes Fukada as the offender, Aomame receives orders to assassinate him.
