Day 2

A Christmas Carol Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

What might the costume of the Ghost of Christmas Past symbolize?

Students will have various interpretations. The Ghost's white tunic might symbolize its purity. The fresh green holly it holds, and summer flowers it wears on a dress, could symbolize the changing of the year, and the re-birth that will come with spring. The jet of clear light that comes from its head might be seen as a sign of the divinity of the Christmas spirit which Scrooge's obsession with money has sought to extinguish.

  2. 2

What might the Ghost of Christmas Past mean by saying "You are one of those passions made this cap, and forced me through whole trains of years to wear it low upon my brow!"
