    Why do you think Dickens chooses for the last Spirit not to speak?

    Not speaking makes makes the last Spirit seem more enigmatic. It provides space for Scrooge to draw his own conclusions, rather than have them force-fed to him by the Spirit. In addition, the Spirit's silence keeps his true identity a mystery. Scrooge thinks he might have been visited by Death himself.

    In the graveyard, why does Scrooge asks the Phantom β€œAre these the shadows of the things that Will be, or are they shadows of things that May be, only?”?

    Scrooge is asking what might be the most important question for him in the novel: he wants to know if he's pre-destined to die alone...
