Why is the Christmas tree bare and disheveled at the beginning of Act II? What might this symbolize?
Throughout the play, the Christmas tree reflects how Nora feels about her family and the state of her household. After being threatened by Krogstad and essentially told by Torvald that she is poisoning her children, Nora appears to have taken down the Christmas decorations and shoved the tree aside, unable to look at this symbol of domestic harmony.
