The town of Chandrapore is described as "scarcely distinguishable from the rubbish." It is on the Ganges but in a section where the river is not holy, and this part of town where the Indians live is described as mean and ugly. Inland there is higher ground where the Eurasians live (Eurasians being a contemporary term for people of mixed English-Indian heritage).
