Nature
In a nonfiction book such as A Sand County Almanac, there may be no physically represented characters, but they still exist. Nature is one of those characters, and can be seen throughout the book, as it is based on ecology. Nature is portrayed in the book as something that can be easily upset, such as when a species is removed from an ecosystem. Said simply, nature itself is an intense organization that seems to drive everything in its own way, making it a character that does in fact exist in real life.
Aldo Leopold
The other character of the book would be the author, whose philosophical essays are included in the work. One of the greatest claims the author makes is that without nature, man has lost the opportunity to truly be free. Perhaps this is true, but it is simply a philosophical statement. Leopold presents the book through his view, such as his boyhood description of the nature around him. In this way, he is the main character and narrator of the book, with Nature, though providing him something to write about, being his companion and simultaneous enemy.
