Sojourner Truth’s birth name is Isabella Bomfree. She was born into slavery in New York when it was still Dutch-speaking. While enslaved, she had several children, many of whom were taken from her, and was sold several times. Her freedom was purchased for twenty dollars by an abolitionist family. Once she was free, Isabella moved to New York City. There, she found solace and power in Christianity and became a preacher. She traveled the area preaching. In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth in part because of her new life as a preacher.
