    Examine the description of the mission to stop the highwaymen. What strikes you about the pacing of the scene? What is significant about the description of the battle? Why does the description stop to describe the men enjoying a snack?

    Students will note that the description of the action is fairly short and bland. However, not glorifying the action connects to the novel's portrayal of war. In the same way that fighting on an international level is destructive instead of glorious, the fighting here is unimpressive and unproductive.
