What does the trident tattoo symbolize?

The trident tattoo is the insignia of the US Navy SEALS. It is a mark that sets them apart from other military forces and it is an image rich with symbolic meaning. It is a symbol of both pride and solidarity for the SEALS as one can only get it after having passed through an extremely rigorous training. Because the training is so difficult it also becomes a symbol of great respect because not everyone can make it through the training.

How is the theme of patriotism discussed in the narrative?

The theme of patriotism is discussed through the exploits of Chris Kyle. He enlists as a soldier in the US Army not because he is desperate and has nowhere else to go or because he seeks recognition but rather he genuinely wants to serve his country. He constantly strives to be the best soldier he can be not just because his team members rely on him and his performance but also because he wants to prove that the costs that have gone into training and arming him and his fellow SEALS are fully justified.

Does the novel aggrandize war? Discuss your answer.

The novel doesn’t aggrandize war per se but it does boast greatly of Chris Kyle’s military exploits and of the Navy SEAL’s tenacity and skill. The novel’s treatment of the military missions are treated with a blunt, almost matter-of-fact method of narration that didn’t glorify combat, instead treating it like an ugly but necessary duty that could only be carried out by the brave and the willing.
