Ed Yong has devoted his career to learning more and writing about the natural world—including humans and the animals that live inside of it. Yong's second book, called An Immense World (which was published in 2022), is about animal senses. Throughout the book, Yong explores how the world is perceived—through things like sight and sound, vibrations, smells, tastes, and electric fields—from the perspective of animals. Throughout the book, Yong talks with experts in the field of animal senses to better understand how animals interact with the world. According to Yong, without understanding how animals interact with the world, humans can't understand themselves and the world around them.
The New York Times, which is known for its book reviews and lists of best books, called An Immense World one of the "10 Best Books of 2022." Yong's book was also a New York Times bestseller. Kirkus Reviews, which said that An Immense World is "One of the year’s best popular natural histories," also called Yong's book one of the best books of 2022. In their glowing review of Yong's book, The Guardian wrote that "[Yong's] magnificent book reveals the strange and mysterious ways that creatures sense their surroundings–pushing our understanding of them to the limit."
