Ed Yong
Author Ed Yong is the main character and narrator of his book An Immense World. Yong, who was born in Malaysia and educated in the United Kingdom, is a staff member at the esteemed news magazine, a company which he joined in 2015. Above all, though, Young is interested in nature and its connection to the human world. That's why he decided to write a book—his second book, which later became An Immense World—about the animal world and specifically, animal perception. An intelligent, well-educated, and dogged man, Yong set out to learn more about animal perception by enlisting the help of some of the world's foremost experts—scientists, veterinarians, and other journalists and writers. Above all, Yong wrote the book to deal with his own personal curiosity and to find the truth of the matter.
Liz Neeley
Liz Neeley is Ed Yong's wife. Throughout his career, Neeley supported him and occasionally collaborated together. Like Yong, Neeley is involved in the world of science and plays an important role in An Immense World. Yong talks about her in the book occasionally and details how instrumental she is in his life and in his writing career.
The animals
The animals that Yong studies and interacts with are a character in his book. Although they can't speak to him, they play a crucial role in the book. In fact, without them, there wouldn't be a book. Yong interacts with countless animals throughout the book—dogs, cats, monkeys, butterflies, and many more. The animals of the world, Yong argues, are what helps humans understand their world and the hidden world in the Earth. In other words, they help humans understand themselves and the world around them better.
