Gerald believes that "young women should be protected against unpleasant things." Why is Eva Smith/Daisy Renton an exception?
Almost certainly because she is poor and lower-class. In their eyes, this makes her less deserving and less valuable than someone like Sheila, for example, who is viewed (incorrectly) as fragile and in need of protection. The Birlings refuse to see the disadvantages that Eva is subject to as anything other than her fault. Thus, she does not need to be protected, and it is certainly not their responsibility to do so.
