George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903 in Burma, then a British colony; his father was a British civil servant. After being educated at Eton College in England, he returned to Burma and joined the Indian Imperial Police. By the age of 24, Eric had decided to become a writer, and he moved to Paris. Unable to find success as a writer, he did menial jobs. This experience inspired his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, which was also the first time he used the pseudonym George Orwell.
