Lucy Maud Montgomery was a popular Canadian novelist of the early 20th century, writing over 20 works between 1908 and 1937.
Montgomery was born and raised on Prince Edward Island, a small maritime province of Canada. Montgomery's mother died when she was an infant, and she was raised by her maternal grandparents. She attended a one-room schoolhouse from age 6 to 19, then earned a teacher's license and studied literature at a university. Montgomery worked as a teacher for two years until the death of her grandfather. Following her grandfather's death in 1898, Montgomery returned to her childhood home to care for her grandmother.
