Apollo Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Kung fu

Kung fu symbolizes Okenwa's sense of security. Since Okenwa feels neglected by his parents, who are busy doing their jobs, he looks for something that gives him a sense of security. According to Okenwa, he must practice defending himself because he is alone. Practicing kung fu gives Okenwa the confidence he needs to face life. One of Okenwa's all-time role models is Bruce Lee, a Kung fu movie icon who dares everyone who tries to intimidate him. Therefore, Okenwa wants to be secure like Bruce Lee, and he can only achieve that by practicing kung fu tactics.

The symbolism of detachment

Books symbolize detachment in Okenwa's family. While growing up, Okenwa felt lonely because his parents valued books more than anything else did. Okenwa's parents were professors, and whenever they returned home, they competed to read books instead of bonding with their son, Okenwa. Therefore, books symbolize detachment because they separate Okenwa from his parents.

Apollo

The Apollo disease that infected Raphael symbolized attachment. Raphael and Okenwa became closer during the infection. Okenwa's parents restricted Raphael from interacting with Okenwa and forced him to lock himself in his room. However, Okenwa sneaked from his room regularly to go and bond with Raphael. In fact, Okenwa administered the eye drops to Raphael, and he contracted the disease.
