As Your Editor
Choose an intellectual or creative opportunity from your high school years that you have enjoyed and highlight how you have grown personally because of the experience. (200 Word Limit)
Chasing after interview subjects, furiously typing away at a keyboard to meet deadline, and becoming allergic to sleep as I sit hunched with a red proofreading pen are scenes well known to the life of an editor. Despite two years of involvement as a writer, no awkward interview subject or public retaliation of a controversial article could prepare me for an editor’s responsibilities.
If one of my staff included misinformation in an article, the blame is on my shoulders. I am in charge of ensuring everyone is administered a substantive article topic, and am expected to guide them as they learn what it takes to inform a news hungry public.
As editor, I have to prove myself everyday. The position of leadership is unlike any other class or project I’ve ever been involved with; failing to meet deadline affects my staff and the entire school community more than it does myself.
Through this editorship, I have learned what it feels like to be relied on. Taking a walk through the hallway only to hear a child-faced freshman discussing the school budget cuts is the most wonderful reward I could ever receive.
