Yale Engineering Anonymous

I discovered science fiction in fourth grade, led by Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I expected reading to reinforce my view of myself as a “humanities person.” But science fiction made technology exciting and showed me engineering could also be about exploring, building, and chasing giant whales. I’ve since been pursuing my own “Nautilus projects,” from self-studying HTML and CSS to compiling AI curriculum.

Further, working in a team has challenged me to take the perspective of not just a designer, but of a builder, logician, and manager. Engineering is an exploratory process—one where both storytelling and software matter.

At Yale, I hope to be part of a community bridging engineering and the humanities. As a Y-shaped engineer, I’ll be able to combine building with exploring: from analyzing coding's intersection with philosophy of mind in CPSC 150, to delving into law and technology in CPSC 183. I'll experiment at Yale's Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM), and join a team of supportive and inspiring peers. Yale's Engineering culture would help foster my dream of creating technology that tells stories. Plus, New Haven is the perfect size for my trusty Nautilus submarine.
