Autobiography of a Face Characters

Autobiography of a Face Character List

Lucy Grealy

Lucy is always very self-conscious and concerned about her appearance. When Lucy was nine years old she was involved in an accident, as she was recuperating from the incident, she was diagnosed with mouth cancer. As Lucy grows older she understands that her illness is associated with cancer and she comes to accept her appearance.

Mrs Grealy

Mrs Grealy was loving, supportive and considerate throughout Lucy's illness and recovery. She masks her own fear and apprehension for Lucy, urging her to be brave. She refuses to be afraid and goes to great lengths to make Lucy feel better. She once bought Lucy a wig just to try and make her smile.

Mr Grealy

Mr Grealy is not as involved as Mrs Grealy in Lucy's treatment and prognosis. He works in news and is seemingly always busy. However, he is still loving and supportive, doing all that he can to help Lucy. He seems to want Lucy to reassure him that she is alright.

Dr Conley

One of Lucy's personal doctors, he is sympathetic to her case and is always kind to Lucy. His treatments and methods are unfruitful and have many side-effects.

Dr Wooly

Dr Wooly also works on Lucy's case. However, unlike Dr Conley he is often times very rude and unsympathetic. His treatments and suggestions are unsuccessful as well.

Derek

Derek is a friend that Lucy makes in the hospital, where he is treated for asthma. He is friendly, handsome and fond of Lucy. He spends a lot of time with her. He is mischievous and always up to something.

Evan

Lucy's friend from her neighborhood. Lucy and Evan were playing Jungle in her living room when Lucy's father comes home and speaks to her shortly about the option of chemotherapy.
