How does Sethe justify trying to kill all her children? Do her reasons make sense to you?

Sethe found a new sense of pride in life upon gaining her freedom, and she did not want her children to experience the kind of life they would have under schoolteacher. She says "I stopped him. I took and put my babies where they'd be safe." She thinks she did the right thing: "It's my job to...keep them away from what I know is terrible. I did that." She sees no other possible way.
