    What does Antonio conclude about God in Chapter 13?

    Antonio is compelled to think about forgiveness. In Cico’s myth, the golden carp would punish sinful people. The Catholic God also punishes sinful people. Antonio wonders, “why couldn’t there be a god who would never punish his people, a god who would be forgiving all of the time?” He concludes that God must be male—or like a man—because men are unforgiving. He believes the Virgin Mary is likely more forgiving because it is in the nature of women to be forgiving.
