Blue Jasmine is an American film by filmmaker Woody Allen. Released in 2013, the comedic drama was theatrically distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. The film explores the life of a formerly rich socialite who has to live with her working-class sister. She has to come to terms with her new circumstances as she attempts to regain a version of her former life.
The script was written by Woody Allen and produced by Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum, and Edward Walson, all under the Gravier and Perdido Production Companies. The ensemble cast includes Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Bobby Cannavale, Peter Sarsgaard, and Michael Stuhlbarg. Javier Aguirresarobe handled the cinematography and Alisa Lepselter edited the film.
At a budget of $18,000,000, the film was a blockbuster success, grossing over $100,000,000. Blue Jasmine was received positively by critics and awarded globally for Allen's directing and Blanchett's performance. It is highly regarded as one of Allen's greatest films. The costume designs are by far the highlight of the film. Allen and Blanchett used their connections in the fashion industry to acquire high-end products that were on display throughout the film.
In 2014, the film was nominated for three Academy Awards; Best Actress for Cate Blanchett, Best Supporting Actress for Sally Hawkins, and Best Original Screenplay for Woody Allen. Blanchett ended up winning Best Actress. She also won other multiple Best Actress awards including at the Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, and the BAFTA Awards.
