The film gained it's title from Ary Barroso's "Aquarela do Brasil." It was written in 1939 by Barroso and is one of the country's most famous songs. It was performed in the film by Geoff Muldaur.

Gilliam used a 9.8mm lens to film Brazil. It was the widest angle lens that had ever been used to that point that did not distort the image to a fish eye look.
