Crooked Hallelujah

Crooked Hallelujah Analysis

Crooked Hallelujah is a contemporary novel written by Kelli Jo Ford and was first published by Black Cat Publishing house on 14 July 2020.

The book follows the life of Justine, a young Cherokee woman brought up in a strictly conventional family, with strong religious roots. Throughout the duration of the book, Justine begins to question the religious practices and teachings of the Holiness Church and the true meaning of spirituality. Set against a backdrop of the racial antagonism towards Native Americans, the book also highlights the abusive treatment faced by minority groups in the 1970s and the sacrifices made in order to persevere through tough and challenging moments.

The book was extremely well received, with it being named one of TIME Magazine's Must-Read Books of 2020 as well as a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2020 for fiction. The Washington Post called it “a compelling journey through the evolving terrain of multiple generations of women... This language is rich but never dense.”
