A heinous crime was committed against a family in the 1930's in Victoria, Australia, but before justice could be done, the valley flooded and the evidence was swept away. The victim's family moved away and tried to forget. Fast forwarding to the future, we meet Sadie and her mother. They have recently returned to her mother's homeland where the crime occurred. Sadie learns from some local crows that the crime did in fact occur.
Then one day she is teleported back in time to the 1930's. She walks around the main street and encounters her great-grandparents who are local business owners. They own a shop on Main. While exploring, she encounters a mystical pool of water with stones arranged that indicate ancient people groups—at least that is the association she makes. She is contemplating the flow of time and the ancient existence of humankind when the crows show back up to tell her that there is more she needs to learn.
There is a local boy in Victoria that Sadie has often thought about dating and marrying, but in the chapters from the past, she meets his grandfather, Lachie Mortlock. Her grandfather is part of a business development plan, but they need Mortlock to sell his land, and he denies them. Finally, she learns what the crime was: the business developers kill Mortlock and Sadie's own ancestor hides the body and then goes ahead with the plan to flood the valley.
