Desire Under the Elms Lesson Plan

Notes to the Teacher

O'Neill's directions are often referred to as notes in this guide, and several questions and activities require that students have read these notes as critically as the lines of the play.

The characters often referred to by other characters as "Maw" and "Paw" are often simply referred to as "Mother" and "Father" in this guide.

For the Day 1, Critical Discussion Assessment, see, They Say, I Say.

Consider flipping the Tableau activity in Day 2 with the Artistic Representations activity in Day 3. While the Day 3 activity has been assigned that way to suit the culminating ideas in the play, it can also serve as a strong foundation for greater quality work in the Day 2 activity.
