Difficult Women Summary

Difficult Women Summary

Difficult Women is a collection of 21 short stories, all of which tells the story of an exceptionally troubled and traumatized but intelligent women whose lives have been dramatically altered by those aforementioned traumas.

In the namesake story “Difficult Women”, for example, gives readers more information about what’s behind typically-maligned groups like “loose women, frigid women, crazy women, mothers, and dead girls.” Really, it makes the point that there is a tremendous amount of depth – depth that some choose not to see – behind these women.

Another story entitled “La Negra Blanca” (“The Black White”) tells the heartbreaking story of a young woman who works two jobs (one of which is a stripper) but is targeted by an exceptionally well-connected and wealthy sexual predator named William Livingston III. Livingston, who is obsessed with black people and their culture, enjoys receiving lap dances from the biracial dancer, unfortunately brutally rapes the young woman to fulfill his dark and twisted fantasies.

Ultimately, each of the stories in Difficult Women paint a more complete, sympathetic, and intelligent picture of women who the world oftentimes ignores or doesn’t help.
