Mr. Zhu is a retired chef living in Taipei, Taiwan. He is a widow with three daughters. Jia-Jen is a chemistry teacher, Jia-Chien is an airline executive, and Jia-Ning is still in college. Mr. Zhu prepares a dinner with her daughters. Jia-Chien breaks the news that she will be moving out of the family home. After the dinner, Mr. Zhu leaves to meet up with Old Wen at a banquet. Old Wen is a family friend who is a professional taster.
Late in the evening, Mr. Zhu questions whether there's more to life except to eat, drink, and the companionship between a man and a woman. Jin-Rong is another family friend who stops by Mr. Zhu's home accompanied by Shan-Shan, her daughter. She is currently going through a divorce, which has been stressful for the whole family. Mr. Zhu and Shan-Shan bond over food as he offers to prepare some food for her.
Ming-Dao is the new volleyball instructor at the same school where Jia-Jen teaches. They meet each other, and soon they develop a relationship. While at work, Jia-Chien is introduced to Li Kai, and they also develop a relationship. Jia-Ning also meets Guo-Lun who is in love with another woman. Unfortunately, this love is unrequited, and he finds comfort and affection in Jia-Ning.
Jia-Chien is unable to move out after the apartment she invested in goes bankrupt. She also learns an uncomfortable truth about Li Kai, which blows up their romance. Mr. Zhu and Old Wen are both hospitalized as their health deteriorates due to old age. They keep their health status a secret from the girls, but Jia-Chien finds out about it. Old Wen later dies and Mr. Zhu loses his taste.
Mr. Zhu prepares another feast where Jia-Chien breaks the news about her lost apartment and Jia-Ning announces her pregnancy. Jia-Jen elopes with Ming-Dao. The two younger sisters move out of the family home to start their families, leaving Jia-Chien with their father.
The family, now growing bigger, meet for another feast, where Mr. Zhu announces his engagement to Jin-Rong. Later, he sells the family home and moves into a condominium with Jin-Rong. Jia-Chien relocates to Amsterdam for a job, but before she leaves she prepares a last feast with the family but only Mr. Zhu shows up.
