The teacher should begin by being aware of a statistic that is noted at the end of the book: one in four U.S students is either an immigrant of the child of an immigrant. That means that, in all likelihood, students in that teacher's classroom will be directly impacted by the very charged topics surrounding immigration that are discussed in this book. Those topics range from immigration policy, to the psychological trauma of separated families, to drug abuse, to physical abuse, to sexual abuse.
