Chuckie Largan
Chuckie is a young Irish lad who was born with humble means. The lack of wealth in his life is what triggers him to start up his ridiculous business ventures. However, this all seems to pay off as Chuckie becomes obscenely wealthy by the end of the book. He is described as being average looking and overweight, but he still manages to attract Max's attention due to his funny personality.
Jake Jackson
Jake is described as being a former bad boy, turned good lad. He is at odds with his troublemaking past and is intent on behaving like a good Catholic. However, this is difficult to do when he becomes involved with Chuckie's illegal business ventures. He is also heartbroken and is looking for love, which he eventually does find with Aoirghe.
Aoirghe
Aoirghe and her best friend Max are on a visit to Ireland to escape the political turmoil of the US. She is described as being very Republican and tends to force her opinion down people's throats, which puts her at odds with Jack. Nonetheless, she eventually changes her perspective on life and begins a romantic relationship with Jack.
Max
Max is described as being very beautiful and intelligent. It is a surprise to everyone that she seems to like Chuckie, especially as he seems to only appreciate her for her looks. Nonetheless, the two enter a relationship and Max stays with him in Ireland.
