The story revolves around the adventures of Chuckie Largan, who is portrayed as being an overweight, poor, but highly ambitious Irish lad.
Chuckie seeks to get himself out of poverty through his dodgy entrepreneurship. He begins to con the people of Norther Island into giving him money for his unusual ideas, such as a balaclava business and a business in selling large dildos. Knowing that women would not issue the refunded cheques with the company name being “Big Dildos’, he manages to keep all the money for himself.
Chuckie is accompanied in these ventures by his best friend, Jake Jackson, a reformed bad boy who has been left heartbroken from his girlfriend dumping him.
As Chuckie goes on to become obscenely wealthy, he begins a relationship with an American, Max, who fled to Ireland to escape the violence in America. Max’s friend, Aoirghe, also comes along and incites trouble in the group due to her fanatical republican views, which angers Jack.
Nonetheless, despite the differences in their personality, Jack and Aoirghebegin a relationship after changing their view points on how each other lives their life. Chuckie and Max also end up living together happily by the end of the book.
