Ajay
Ajay is the main character and protagonist. He is essentially a 40-year-old man that is narrating the story of his life, which begins when he is eight years old. He was a young Indian boy that grew up in Delhi, before he moved to America with his family. Ajay spend a lot of time thinking about his situation and circumstances and wished to feel loved and wanted by his parents, who spent all their time on their oldest son.
Birju
Birju is Ajay’s brother, two years his senior. He is a bright child and Ajay used to look up to him. He managed to make friends easily when they initially moved to America. Birju was playing in the pool, and feel and smashed his head by the side, which left him brain damaged and in the state of a vegetable. The downfall of the eldest son in the family was so hard that it tarnished everyone in the family forever.
Rajinder
Rajinder is Ajay’s father. In the beginning of the book, Ajay finds his father useless, as he doesn’t work and has no authority. He didn’t understand why he was a necessary part of the family. Rajinder helps the family move to America, as he is the first one to be admitted. When Birju is injured, Rajinder becomes an alcoholic and ignoring the rest of his family.
