Family
Family is, naturally, the main theme in Family Life and the whole story is about young Ajay's and his place in the family. The story looks at how different family members relate to each and how they deal with good and bad events. It is the way the members of the family relate to each other that brings forth the theme.
Grief
Grief is another main theme in the book. When the accident with his older brother happens, Jay’s family deeply affected by grief. The way Ajay's parent grief from the accident also affects Ajay as he does not get the care and affection he needs from his parents.
Prevailing love
Although most of the book is filled with negativity and grief, the author also creates a theme of prevailing love. This shows up at times in the book in how they deal with Birju and his disabilities, making fun of it whilst trying to forget. Ajay also develops a bond with his brother and tells him about his insecurities and problems
