This lesson plan makes use of Susan Shapiro's 1972 English translation of Family. Like Shapiro's translation, this lesson plan uses the older Wade-Giles system of romanisation, with some Hanyu pinyin sprinkled throughout. Additionally, in certain cases where Shapiro's translation choices are less accurate, it diverges with them. An example of this is Shapiro's translation of two words that describe Mingfeng, 婢女 (binü) and 丫頭 (yatou). In Shapiro's version, these words are both translated as "bondmaid", whereas a somewhat more accurate translation in context would be the less euphemistic term "slave girl".
