Father Christmas Irony

Father Christmas Irony

Disapproval of gifts

Father Christmas receives many gifts from friends and strangers during his tour while making deliveries. Ironically, when he retires to bed at night, Father Christmas opens the gifts and disapproves of them except the brandy bottle he receives from Fred. The reader expects Father Christmas to at least appreciate those who sacrificed their time to give him their presents. However, Father Christmas does the opposite when he disapproves of the gifts.

Living without family

Father Christmas is depicted as a father figure who is humble, loving, and careering. Ironically, he does not have a family except the dog, cat, and two reindeer he showers with gifts on special days. At least, readers expect to see Mrs. Clues (supposedly Father Christmas' wife), but she is nowhere to be seen. Additionally, readers see Father Christmas giving gifts to his pets, but no children are around.

Father Christmas’ attitude of complaining

Initially, Father Christmas is depicted as a man who complains a lot. Ironically, despite showing a complaining attitude, Father Christmas loves what he does. Father Christmas is jovial while making deliveries to different places and welcomes people joyfully. Therefore, it is ironic that a man who loves complaining can also be affectionate and joyful.
