What is the significance of the “sort of preface”?
On a practical level, the preface serves as a disclaimer to Bambara’s loved ones and other curious readers who might think some of the stories are based on her life. She felt the need to make it very clear that the stories are entirely fiction and not autobiographical. Furthermore, “A Sort of Preface” sets the tone for the short story collection. In it, Bambara gives the reader a little taste of voice, of her creative use of grammar, and of the kinds of characters and culture the reader will encounter.
