Discuss Conrad's use of pacing during the river battle. How does he use pacing to create tension?
Conrad paces the battle with a lot of gloomy foreshadowing, leading up to nothing. There is a lull, and silence, and then the attack happens. This makes its appearance all the more sudden, as the reader has been expecting an attack from the fog for many pages. When the fog lifts, the reader may assume that the metaphor lifts, and the clarity represents something more positive. The sudden change of pace before the hail of arrows makes this event more startling.
