Imagery of darkness/night
Imagery of night and darkness is present at the beginning of the novel when the peculiar children are hiding from the wights in the dark caves and later when they find shelter in the night. The darkness is also a shelter to the two echo locators who were hiding in the dark when their loop was raided. The term of hiding, hiding in the dark, is closely related to the peculiar world, as they have to hide to keep themselves safe.
Imagery of fog
Imagery of fog appears at the beginning of the novel when the group is trying to reach the land. When the fog appears it creates confusion and the children are having a hard time to regroup. But, they later realize that the fog was probably hiding them from the wights. Therefore fog is also a kind of a shelter to the peculiar children related to the idea of hiding.
Imagery of Emma's warmth
This imagery is closely related to Emma's relationship with Jacob. Her warmth attracts him and calms him in the times of despair.
Imagery of destruction
Imagery of destruction is present in the London in 1940 war time. There are signs of destruction everywhere: holes as an aftermath of bombs are covering roads, rubble and destroyed buildings, abandoned babies, abandoned homes.
