    Symbols of Growing Up

    Kind of Activity:

    Collaborative Writing

    Objective:

    To make connections between the shoes and other symbols of adulthood in our society

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.10 ; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.6

    Structure:

    Split students up into small groups. They will need paper and pencils or pens, or tablets and digital drawing or painting software. Instruct students to divide their paper into four squares by drawing lines down and across the middle (creating a cross). In the upper left hand corner, have students draw a shoe and, in their own words, write an explanation of how the high-heeled shoes in “The Family with Little Feet” symbolize...
