    Why does Esperanza cry during her encounter with Sister Superior?

    Sister Superior instructs Esperanza to point out her house. The sister assumes Esperanza lives in an ugly, worn-down house (“the ones even the raggedy men are ashamed to go into”). Her poverty is suddenly on display. Esperanza also continues to cry over her rice sandwich, which she has because her family cannot afford lunch meat. This is another sign of her family’s poverty, which makes Esperanza sad and ashamed.
