I'll Give You the Sun was written in 2014 by Jandy Nelson, and was published by Dial Books. It is Nelson's second book, and received great amounts of literary acclaim- the novel received the Josette Frank Award for Younger Readers in 2015, the Michael L. Printz Award in 2015, and was nominated for a Georgia Peach Book Award for Honor book in 2015 and a Goodreads Choice Award for Young Adult Fiction in 2014.
Nelson was inspired to write I’ll Give You the Sun after the two main characters - a set of twins named Jude and Noah - arrived in her brain, along with bits and pieces of their stories. Both characters have a passion for art, something that they share with Nelson, who has considered getting a PhD in art history.
The novel follows two twins named Jude and Noah throughout their teenage years, as they navigate family issues, school and their first relationships. The narration switches between the twins at thirteen and sixteen, with their younger years narrated by Noah and their older years narrated by Jude. I’ll Give You the Sun deals heavily with the topics of sexuality, depression and anxiety, family issues, death and bullying.
Movie rights for the book were optioned by Warner Brothers in 2014, and Natalie Krinsky has been enlisted to write the script.
