Incriminatory Cloud
The imagery of "smoke coming rolling out of his [Cedric's] mouth in a great incriminatory cloud" demonstrates the tension between Cedric and Fernando. This description can be interpreted on a literal level as being indicative of Cedric's smoking habit. It also has symbolic implications that illustrate the hostile relationship between these two characters. The phrase "incriminatory cloud" conjures up the idea of an accusation or judgment being made against Cedric. Fernando and other members of the staff are accusing him of stealing cigarettes. The smoke coming from his mouth could also indicate that he has been caught in a lie or misdeed. Thus, overall this imagery accentuates the animosity between Cedric and Fernando while simultaneously hinting at some kind of wrongdoing on Cedric's part.
Magic Spell
The imagery of a spell describes how Mrs. Lardner's magic punch affects the mother. By saying that "my mother seemed to be under some spell," Callie evokes an image of a mysterious power taking over her. She accepts a full cup of the drink without hesitation giving her an unexpected burst of energy and enthusiasm. In essence, Mrs. Lardner has cast a spell over Callie’s mother with her hospitality and generosity. As such, it allows her to enjoy herself despite being surrounded by people wearing much less formal attire than what her family chose. Mrs. Lardner's kindness has far-reaching effects beyond what one might expect from simply having someone provide guests with refreshments.
Defiance
Callie depicts her father's defiance and strength against Jeremy—who was trying to take advantage of him by selling him an expensive jacket. She asserts, "My father flung the polo shirt into the water with such force that part of it bounced back up into the air like a fluorescent fountain. Then it settled into a soft heap on top of the water." The image of his shirt bouncing back up out of the pool—illuminated by what can be assumed to be twilight or street lamps—denotes his refusal to accept Jeremy's power over him. This depiction stands out because it captures my father's momentary triumph over an adversary who has been attempting to take advantage of his lack of experience in American culture and language.
Table Manners
The narrator illustrates how inebriated Jeremy is as he is trying to open a wine bottle with his teeth instead of an opener. It shows his recklessness and disregard for proper etiquette at the party. This behavior stands out from the other guests who are conversing politely and laughing merrily. Moreover, it creates a contrast between him and Mr. Chang who laughs uncomfortably while Jeremy speaks drunkenly. Lastly, it brings attention to how confident and in control Jeremy appears despite being drunk. In that, he is used to such debauchery and can handle himself quite well even when under the influence.
